Hendra Arkan
Meet Hendra Arkan from Yogyakarta, Indonesia – the artist behind a series of illustrations displayed on our coffee packaging. He beautifully mingles traditional cultural motifs with the modern medium and style to tell the fascinating story of the origins of our coffee.

With a background in science and a passion for art that began with watercolor as his primary medium, Hendra's recent work has expanded into experimental and conceptual approaches as the foundation of his artwork and visual designs. Inspired by daily observations of social life and issues, his work style combines digital and manual techniques. He promotes the idea of creating art as a bridge between modern and traditional ways of life, reflecting the environment where he grew up, particularly focusing on human connections with nature.
His Kerinci coffee packaging design borrows traditional batik motifs from the area near Mount Kerinci in Sumatra. The design draws inspiration from local patterns and the word “Ngupai” in local alphabets, symbolising "to drink coffee" as part of the cultural identity. These designs celebrate cultural diversity and local wisdom from their place of origin. The motifs on his illustrations are used to narrate stories unique to their origin, which are still preserved and cherished by the local community. This interdisciplinary approach reflects a commitment to cultural expression, creativity, and community engagement.
