Masarang Foundation
Tomohon, North Sulawesi
We’ve partnered with Masarang Foundation to bring you the world’s most sustainable forest sugar. Powered by renewable geothermal energy, this project offers a green alternative to palm oil, preserving the endangered forests of Indonesia and fighting against climate change.

100% clean energy sugar production
Masarang Foundation pioneered the world’s first factory to use clean and waste-free energy in producing Arenga sugar. The project was recognised as one of the top 12 green initiatives globally by the World Challenge 2007.
Traditional sugar production involves the use of firewood, with 10-20 kg needed to produce just 1 kg of sugar. In contrast, the Masarang Sugar Factory in collaboration with Pertamina Geothermal Energy uses hot steam from the earth to generate electricity. For every 1 tonne of sugar produced, approximately 18.3 to 36.6 tonnes of CO₂ emissions are avoided, substantially reducing the carbon footprint.
Sustainable and ethical harvest
Arenga sugar, known locally as gula aren organik, is derived from the versatile Arenga pinnata tree, which grows naturally in biodiverse forests. The harvesting process involves making gentle incisions on the tree's flower stems, and local harvesters climb these incredibly tall trees to collect the precious juice, ensuring the tree remains untouched and unharmed.
Why choose arenga forest sugar?
Arenga sugar stands out for its health benefits, boasting a low glycemic index (GI 48-52), making it a diabetic-friendly option. It is rich in minerals, containing:
50x more minerals than white sugar.
3x more potassium than bananas.
Nutrient-rich content including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, sodium, copper, vitamin C, and B12.
It has even been classed as "beyond organic," in Indonesia with a "Forest Grade" designation – reserved for products derived from superior forest ecosystems.
This sugar offers a unique, caramel-like sweetness with complex umami flavours, making it a flavourful and healthy alternative to standard white sugar.
Nature positive
The remarkable Arenga pinnata tree has significant conservation potential as it:
Enhances carbon sequestration through increased forest cover
Restores and preserves biodiversity
Supports better management of forest fires
Provides sustainable livelihoods for local communities
Prevents soil erosion with its strong root system
Community impact
The use of geothermal energy not only reduces CO₂ emissions but also plays a crucial role in preserving Indonesia’s forests. This shift not only benefits the environment but also enhances local farmers’ livelihoods, allowing them to double their income and reduce working hours, while also improving their health. Focusing on tapping trees and not making sugar allows them to collect more juice to sell for the factory at a good price. Juice collection consumes significantly less time than cooking, 7 hours as opposed to 12.
Reinvesting in sustainability
To support the impact of the foundation, 20% of profits from Masarang Sugar are reinvested into Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue centre in North Sulawesi, which rescues hundreds of trafficked animals every year.
