The project

The remarkable Arenga pinnata tree has significant conservation potential as it enhances carbon sequestration through increased forest cover, restores and preserves biodiversity, supports better management of forest fires, provides sustainable livelihoods for local communities, and prevents soil erosion with its strong root system.

The people

The use of geothermal energy in processing our Arenga sugar not only reduces CO₂ emissions but also plays a crucial role in preserving Indonesia’s forests. This shift not only benefits the environment but also enhances local farmers’ livelihoods, allowing them to double their income and reduce working hours, while also improving their health. Focusing on tapping trees and not making sugar allows them to collect more juice to sell for the factory at a good price. Juice collection consumes significantly less time than cooking, 7 hours as opposed to 12.

Harvest and process

Arenga sugar, known locally as gula aren organik, is derived from the versatile Arenga pinnata tree, which grows naturally in biodiverse forests. The harvesting process involves making gentle incisions on the tree's flower stems, and local harvesters climb these incredibly tall trees to collect the precious juice, ensuring the tree remains untouched and unharmed.
